Pickerings Pasture

Green Flag in Widnes Pickerings Pasture is a Local Nature Reserve in Widnes with acres of wildflower meadows and wide views across the River Mersey.


Until the 1950s the area now covered by wild flowers and trees was a salt marsh, grazed by cattle and home to wading birds and estuary plants. For the next 30 years however, the site was used as an industrial and household waste tip and a mountain of refuse built up on the salt marsh. The land was reclaimed in the 80's by Halton Borough Council.


A haven for wildlife, designated a Local Nature Reserve and holder of the Green Flag Award. It is a place where people can go to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside whilst taking in the magnificant views of the upper Mersey estuary.

An ideal place for a picnic or just a walk through the meadows. Don't miss the visitor centre for information about the variety of wildlife.

Many different kinds of animals, butterflies and birds can be found in the meadows and woodlands of Pickerings Pasture. In Widnes Nature Reservewinter the River Mersey has huge numbers of wildfowl and wading birds, while birds of prey, including peregrine falcons, patrol the skies overhead. A hide is provided to watch the birds on Hale Marshes, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

    My mum loves to take her dog there and will visit often to see the different wildflowers at different times of the year.
    We found some great blackberries yesterday too!
