The Railway in Widnes

Widnes got it's first railway station in 1852 on the west side of Waterloo Road but Widnes Railway Stationit was closed by 1870 and replaced by Widnes South Station which remained open to passengers until 1962. A further station Widnes Central was constructed in 1879 and remained open until 1964. Widnes was also served by Ditton Station on the west side of Hale Road which opened in 1871 and survived until 1994.

The only surviving station opened in 1872 and was originally known as Farnworth, which was at the time a village north of Widnes, but is now a northern suburb of the town. The station was later renamed to Widnes North and finally to Widnes.

Paul Simon is supposed to have been inspired to write the song "Homeward Bound" while waiting at this station on a tour of the United Kingdom. A plaque commemorating this claim to fame was once situated on the Liverpool bound platform of the station. The song, however, was actually written at the now disused Ditton station.

I remember seven railway stations in Widnes and traveled to or from all but Tanhouse Lane. Does anybody know when the road bridge at Farnworth station was reconstructed?

Why is there no info on Hough Green station? Which was built in 1872 and replaced the'Welshmans house' and used to have a branch line that used to run along Bankfeild and go under Chestnut Lodge to Widnes Central...

Haha, Paul Simon said, on his inspiration for Homeward Bound, that 'Anybody that has seen Widnes will know why I wanted to get back to London as quickly as possible.'
Poor Widnes, guess it was different in the seventies...

The whole Paul Simon story is a mass of confabulation and myth.Paul Simon is reported to have been travelling to Burtonwood after a night out in Liverpool.Fomer Mayor Eddie Gleave got hold of this innoccuous trivia and reportedly contacted Simon to confirm if the song was inspired in any way by a brief passage via Farnworth(Widnes North)station.Simon thought it might have been a possibility that he looked out of the window at this stop. Then comes the massive leap from possibility to where we are now.Fiction or fact. Maybe a Royal Commission is needed for the truth.
